B. ‘89-140’, B. ‘90-85’ and other names in the same format published in Kirchner-Abel et al. (2004) are based on Herrenhäuser Gärten Brugmansia collection numbers which were originally prefixed with “HG”. Indeed several appear in the same work with that prefix, e.g. B. ‘HG 88-10’, B. ‘HG 88-11’ etc. Those published without the prefix cannot be established as cultivar names as they contravene Art. 21.15 of the 2009 ICNCP in the epithets consisting, after January 1st 2004, solely of numerals and a punctuation mark. Those published with the prefix should be regarded as established, since alpha-numeric codes are permitted as epithets under Art. 21.25 of the 2009 ICNCP. However, they are not accepted by us as the collection numbers were clearly never intended as cultivar epithets by H.-G. Preissel with whom they originated (see, for example, Preissel, 1993). Art. 21.25, Note 3 indicates that collection numbers are not to be taken as cultivar epithets. The numerous other Herrenhäuser Gärten collection numbers listed here, included because at least some of these clones probably remain in circulation in Europe, are not intended to be established as cultivar names.
