Hi Forum, i found this thread some time ago and today I would like to share some experience in grafting older plants. By the way: Grafting young seedlings is much more easy, so here just the grafting of older plants. (Grafting of seedlings may be posted later). Ludger et al have always shown approach-grafting and not the classic way used in grafting apples etc.
Basics: Brugs of the cold and warm Group can be grafted an each other and vice-versa, no problem. But: Do never graft a sanguinea on a versicolor, this will surely work, but that does not match and is not usefull.
(I have never tried to graft Datura on Brugmansia, no interest in Datura.)
Grafting`s purpose is to place a scion with problems on own roots onto a very healthy and thriving rootstock to avoid problems in growing these plants. For example: A Wildfire is said to be sensitive to root-rot, so graft it on an average yellow or rose rootstock of the warm group or an arborea.
Grafting is fun to do and if done properly, it will be successfull. Best time is late spring/early summer, when rootstock and scions have intense growth..
Last Year I grafted 3 warm.group scions (Maya, Theas Liebling, Super Spot) onto an average rose rootstock. the pictures attached show the rootstock, three branches are cut for the grafts, one remains as the original rootstock. The scions should have the same diameter as the rootstock-branches, remove most leaves ro reduce evaporation. Then cut both in the same angle, put them together, wrap them with material used by plumbers and then put some plastic over each graft to provide high humidity. Put the plant into the shadow and wait 2-4 weeks for the graft to “take”. (means: healing of the grafting, establishing a connection between scion and rootstock). Then remove the plasstic-bags and cultivate the plant normally.
My plant has survived the winter, grows well, every scion has bloomed this year. Maya (grafted a a side-shoot!!!) is very vigorous and I have to keep the four brugs in balance by pruning Maya and the rootstock.
If I had to try it once again, I would cut the rootstock much nearer towards the Y-branching-Point…..
Hope this finds someone`s interest, just try it, it is not a miracle…
… Grafting was just fun for me to know, whether it can be done the classic way. Grafting seedlings seems to be much more interesting, I think….
